Chapter Fourteen-Point-Five — The Echo of Choice --- Bound by Dark Series by E.Kane
The Empress woke before dawn.
She did not know what had disturbed her.
There had been no messenger.
No alarm.
No disruption in the wards surrounding the Court.
And yet the vow-mark at her wrist pulsed faintly with quiet
insistence.
Not pain.
Not warning.
Presence.
She sat upright slowly, letting the silence of her chamber
settle around her.
The high windows revealed a city still wrapped in darkness.
Lanterns flickered along the distant streets, and somewhere below the palace a
patrol changed shifts.
Everything appeared calm.
Which meant something had changed.
She rose from the bed and crossed the chamber barefoot, the
cool stone grounding her thoughts.
The vow pulsed again.
Nyx.
Not in danger.
Not injured.
But… challenged.
She closed her eyes and allowed herself a moment of
stillness.
Distance had sharpened the connection between them in ways
she had not expected. It was no longer a constant presence. Instead, it arrived
in subtle impressions, fragments of awareness carried along the thread they had
chosen together.
Tonight, the thread felt…
Steady, but stretched.
“He’s speaking with someone,” she murmured.
The thought did not frighten her.
It intrigued her.
A knock sounded at her door.
“Enter.”
Vaelor stepped inside, his expression already tense.
“You felt it,” he said.
The Empress did not bother denying it.
“The border shifted.”
“Yes.”
He studied her carefully.
“The Circle believes the protocol’s failure will force Nyx
to return.”
She almost smiled.
“They still misunderstand him.”
Vaelor crossed the room slowly.
“They misunderstand both of you.”
She turned toward the window again.
“Good.”
His brow furrowed.
“You want them to underestimate you?”
“I want them to continue believing restraint equals
weakness,” she said calmly.
“And when they discover otherwise?”
Her voice remained soft.
“They won’t.”
Vaelor stared at her for several seconds.
“You’re planning something.”
“I’m preparing.”
He folded his arms.
“The Court is unstable.”
“It was unstable before Nyx ever knelt.”
“That may be true,” he said, “but the bond between you has
accelerated things.”
She turned back toward him.
“Yes.”
“And you’re not concerned?”
The Empress considered the question carefully.
“Concern implies uncertainty.”
“And you’re certain?”
“No.”
Her expression softened slightly.
“I’m deliberate.”
The vow warmed again.
Stronger this time.
Not an alarm.
Recognition.
“He’s not alone,” she said quietly.
Vaelor’s posture stiffened.
“The silver crown.”
“Yes.”
“Should we send forces to the border?”
“No.”
Vaelor blinked.
“You’re serious.”
“Completely.”
“That entity has been pressing the boundary for weeks.”
“And Nyx has held it.”
“This is different.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
Silence filled the chamber.
Finally, Vaelor sighed.
“You trust him.”
“I trust his choices.”
“And if those choices lead him away from the Court?”
Her gaze remained steady.
“Then the Court was never worthy of him.”
Vaelor stared at her.
“You’re willing to risk everything.”
She turned back toward the city.
The first faint hint of sunrise touched the horizon.
“Yes,” she said quietly.
“Because chains were never going to hold him.”
The vow pulsed once more.
Far away, at the border, Nyx stood beneath a sky beginning
to pale with morning.
He did not know she had felt the encounter.
He did not know the Court was already preparing another
move.
But he did know one thing with absolute certainty.
The next conflict would not be subtle.
And when it arrived,
The border would not be the only line that broke.
